Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can I get help?
We will do our best to return your call in 24 business hours. On average, it takes a couple of days to link you with a volunteer. Sometimes, we are able to respond to urgent requests.
Can I change my mind?
Of course! You have complete control and can change your mind at any time. You are not giving up any of your rights or power.
Do I lose rights to my children?
No, absolutely not. You keep full custody of your children at all times. You are not giving up any of your rights or power. And you are encouraged to participate in decisions regarding their care while they are being hosted. We aim to form a partnership between you and the volunteer families and see the Host Family as an extended family.
How frequently may I speak with or see my children?
We work very hard to keep you connected with your children. You can expect to talk daily or video chat daily with your children. If your children are hosted longer than a week, we will work with you to set up weekly visits. Because these families are volunteers, we want to ensure the arrangements are convenient for everyone involved.
Can my children stay together?

Every effort will be made to keep your children together in the home of one Host Family. But this may not be possible because our volunteer Host Families often have children of their own. There may be space and/or time constraints to taking more than one child at a time.

How will my child be taken care of? School, daycare, medical needs, etc?

We will do everything in our power to ensure your child’s daily routine is maintained. This includes your child’s schools and daycare. Host Families will work with you to ensure your child is healthy and safe at all times.

Will someone check on my children?
A Family Coach will be assigned to you and your children. They will visit them regularly to ensure everything is going well.
Can I meet the Host Family before my children go?
You will always be connected to the host family before your children go to stay with them. You will be able to call, text, or video chat with them. If time allows, sometimes we are able to plan an in-person meeting. This will depend on everyone’s availability and how urgent your needs may be.
Why are Host Families willing to help?
All families are volunteers who are not paid for this service. Many Host Families open their homes because of their faith & belief in serving and loving others. Safe Families does not arrange adoptions, and we are not a foster care or adoption service.
What is a typical Host Family like?
Host families come in all shapes and sizes. Many have children of their own. They have willing hearts and open homes. And they, along with other caring individuals, are here to care for your children while you get back on your feet.
Are Host Families licensed foster families?
Most Host Families are not licensed foster families, nor are they required to be. However, our Host Families are thoroughly screened (through background checks, interviews, home screenings, and references) before approval, similar to foster care families.
We surround families facing crisis with caring, compassionate community. FIND A CHAPTER
